Which sales platforms will yield the greatest returns?
Ask the average international E-commerce entrepreneur what major sales platforms are available on the market. Amazon and eBay- you know. Ask highly successful entrepreneurs the same question. The answer will certainly be: it depends on the country.
Let's examine the issue starting from our own backyard. According to market research, the most popular sales platform in 2020 remains Allegro. It captures 53% of all online customers and is the undisputed leader. It leaves the competition far behind (in second place OLX with 13%). Amazon only entered the Polish market in March. Its beginnings promise to be promising, especially as it has already announced a fight for the palm of supremacy with the undisputed king of Polish ecommerce.
Every country has its own habits and shopping habits. CommerceBay's experts are constantly observing the global market for sales platforms, its trends and variables. We make sure that our clients are aware of foreign markets, which is why we constantly report E-commerce news to them.
We would also like to reveal the secret here, so we are starting a series of posts about the most popular sales platforms in the various regions. Enjoy!
Today order, tomorrow dispatch, that is Bol
This slogan is not at all over the top. There are many myths and scandals surrounding Bol's mode of operation, but the Bol shop actually prides itself on arriving on time. Parcels delivered late account for only 2% of all shipments.
The Dutch were not a nation at the forefront of online shopping-until last year. The pandemic forced new buying habits increasing E-commerce turnover in the Netherlands by as much as 40%. Last year, the Dutch spent nearly €2.6bn on purchases from foreign online shops within the European Union.
The most popular international sales platform in the Netherlands is Bol.
It acts as a shop and online marketplace. It operates on a similar principle to Amazon-it sells directly itself, but also provides space for shops. It serves around 8 million customers from the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Luxembourg, generating an annual turnover of €1 billion. Approximately 2 million customers visit the platform daily and Bol is ahead of Amazon in the Dutch sales rankings by as many as six places.
Advertising as a lever for E-commerce
Bol's way of advertising has proved to be an interesting and successful idea. In addition to banners and sponsored products, many retailers choose to advertise in Bol's online magazine. It is published in three categories: Style, Tech and Home, with a total readership of up to one million. Nevertheless, the greatest strength of advertising in the magazine is that it reaches an audience interested in the products of the category and can really work wonders.
How much does it cost?
The launch itself is completely free. You set up your shop and display your products for free. Fees start at the time of sale. The amount depends on the type and price of the specific product, but always consists of two elements:
- a fixed fee depending on the product category (€1-3);
- percentage of sales (5-25%).
Bol standards
The platform cares about good PR, so it imposes rules on its sellers that establish credibility and improve customer satisfaction while encouraging them to turn up the score. Traders who do not adhere to these requirements do not achieve a high sales reach and are consequently removed from the platform. For example, sellers can only cancel 2% orders, packages should be shipped with tracking, and the percentage of orders delivered on time should be 98 %. In addition, the seller should allow free product returns for up to 30 days and respond to customer queries within six hours on weekdays.
